Policy developments and their impact on farming agreements
In this session, Julie Robinson, partner at Roythornes Solicitors, will look at developments in the Sustainable Farming Incentive and other environmental schemes (including BNG and carbon agreements) and the impact of the small print on farmers. In particular, we will review the implications for landlord/tenant relationships, focusing on the difference between the AHA and FBT regimes. The session will also cover any critical post-election policy announcements.

So many things seem to be conspiring to make tax compliance checks harder to deal with. In this session Mark Lumsdon-Taylor will interview Baroness Bennett, former Green Party leader and member of the House of Lords, as one of only two Green Peers. Baroness Bennett studied agriculture at university before a career in journalism and various posts in the UN.

Cash Basis
Katherine Ford, Technical Manager in the ICAEW’s Tax team, will take a look at the cash basis of income tax for unincorporated business. With the cash basis becoming the default option from 6 April 2024 and the turnover test for entry and exit being removed, businesses might wish to revisit whether this would be an appropriate way for them to calculate their taxable profits. The session will look at what is changing from the tax year 2024/25, the main design features of the cash basis and how they apply to the farming sector.

Roseanne, a Chartered Accountant, qualified in East Anglia before returning to the North East in 2007. She supports a diverse client base with accounting, taxation, and business advice, with a special interest in agricultural and rural businesses.

Laura Rous
Laura Rous Managing Partner, Dennington Hall Farms

Two years ago Laura took over the management of Dennington Hall Farms, which has been in her family for over 750 years. Building on the sustainable practices established by her father, and grandfather she is leading the farm’s diverse operations, which include agriculture, Bruisyard Country Estate an events venue, residential and commercial property portfolio, renewable energy and lots of possible projects in the pipeline. Before returning to the farm, Laura worked in product management in the tech sector, and she is now applying that experience to drive innovation and growth at Dennington Hall.

Rebecca Bennyworth
Rebecca Benneyworth Lecturer, writer and tax consultant

Rebecca is a lecturer, writer and consultant on a wide variety of taxes. She lectures extensively to accountants and business people, and also to HMRC and the Treasury. She also has an interest in all issues affecting smaller practices and has her own small accountancy practice based in Gloucestershire.

George Crossley
George Crossley Farm Manager, Rushmere Farm

George farms 250 acres of organically certified cereals and pulses, demonstrating the importance of building a healthy ecosystem around productive cropping. A strong emphasis is also put on human health; growing healthy food, producing nutritious flour and oat drink as well as providing beautiful spaces to visit with cottages and yurts for stays.

Maria Carvalho Head of Climate Economics and Data at NatWest Group

Maria works in the Climate Strategy team to develop financial solutions to support our clients to reach net zero. She has over 15 years of experience researching and advising governments, international institutions, and the private sector in addressing climate challenges amid rapid technological and societal change.

With a decade’s expertise in policy and a legal foundation, Maria now advises WWF-UK. She’s at the crux of food and finance, advocating for UK farmers and promoting agroecology and regenerative agriculture. Her aim is to prove sustainable farming’s profitability and bridge the gap between public, private, and farming sectors. This ensures investments flow towards an inclusive agricultural transition, leaving no farmer behind in the shift towards practices aligned with nature protection and restoration.

Kevin Igoe
Kevin Igoe Managing Director, Bspoke Fee Protection

Kevin Igoe is a Chartered Tax Advisor who started off a career in tax with the Inland Revenue back in 1985. He has since worked for a big four firm before moving into the fee protection industry almost 30 years ago. Kevin has seen over 35,000 tax enquiries and disputes of various kinds and brings an entertaining presentation style together with unrivalled experience in tax investigations. Now Managing Director of Bspoke Fee Protection Kevin is able to share up to date practical insights in dealing with HMRC enquiries.

Clare Haigh
Clare Haigh Head of Environmental Markets, C-Zero Markets

Clare has been in the energy industry since 2009 and joined C-Zero in 2023. Her focus is on green power and gas certificate origination whilst ensuring power and green gas generator clients maximise the value of their renewable assets. Clare also supports some of C-Zero’s corporate clients looking to match their climate solutions directly with renewable assets and specific carbon offset projects.

Richard Jones
Richard Jones Senior Technical Manager, Tax Policy, ICAEW

Richard joined the ICAEW Tax Faculty in November 2020,coordinating the work of ICAEW on business tax and tax compliance & investigations matters and manage the committees related to these areas. Richard is a regular contributor to TAXline, newswire and IACEW’s Insights Podcast. Richard began his tax career at PwC where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2001. 

Julie Robinson
Julie Robinson, Partner, Roythornes Solicitors

With previous experience at the National Farmers’ Union and the National Trust, Julie’s work is very much focussed on land-based businesses, especially farmers. She advises on Landlord tenant relationships, including Agricultural Holdings Act successions; Farming joint ventures and collaborations; Natural capital opportunities for farmers and landowners; Farming subsidies and environmental schemes. Julie is named as a Legal 500 leading individual in agriculture and estates law, and is a sought-after speaker and member of agricultural policy working groups.

Richard King

Richard joined Andersons' Research team in Melton Mowbray in 1998. The team analyses and interprets agricultural policy and market developments, and provides specialist business research, training, briefings, and publishes information. He became editor of the Agricultural Budgeting and Costing Book in 2000 and joined the Andersons Centre Partnership in 2003.

James Robinson
James Robinson Chair of the England Steering Group

James farms 300ac of organic land in Cumbria with his family. The farm is home to 250 head of organic Dairy Shorthorn cattle and the land is made up of a mix of pasture and meadow, interspersed with a range of habitats, such as hay meadows, wetland, ancient hedgerows and woodland. The family won the 2022 FWAG Silver Lapwing Award in recognition of their commitment to farm conservation.

Louise Speke
Louise Speke Chief Tax Adviser, CLA

Louise leads the CLA team of tax advisers and has overall responsibility for tax law and policy, including the tax advisory service to members. Represents the CLA on HMRC’s Capital Tax Liaison Group and their VAT on Land & Property Liaison Group. She is also a member of the Welsh Government Tax Forum. She originally qualified as solicitor and after leaving private practice worked as the Law Society’s Tax Policy Adviser before joining the CLA in July 2013.

With a focus on agricultural machinery and technology, Toby provides informative and insightful articles on the latest innovations in the farming industry.
